An afternoon of hiking and astronomy

On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, Villaviciosa will host a special experience: a walk up Monte Cubera to watch one of the year's major astronomical events from its viewpoint.

The activity includes an introductory talk and guided observation led by teacher Pablo Cayado Llosa from Villaviciosa ConCiencia.

Schedule and route

The walk starts at 5:45 pm from Villaviciosa Town Hall Square. The group will meet again at 6:30 pm at Montotu Chapel before reaching the Monte Cubera viewpoint at 7:30 pm for the eclipse viewing.

The ascent shown on the poster runs via Montotu and covers 2.57 km, with approximately 320 m of elevation gain and an estimated walking time of 51 minutes. After the total phase of the eclipse, the group will return along the same route.

Safety advice

Parts of the route have gradients above 15% and follow forest paths, so participants must wear suitable footwear and have an appropriate level of fitness. The organisers ask anyone who is not physically prepared for the walk not to take part.

Participation implies acceptance of instructions from the organisers, Local Police, Civil Protection and volunteers, as well as the safety protocols established for viewing the eclipse.

Further information about the phenomenon and safe viewing guidance is available on the official Eclipse Asturias 2026 website.

Organisers

The activity is organised by Villaviciosa Town Council, with support from Villaviciosa ConCiencia, Grupo de Montaña Llama Ello and Cubera, as part of the initiatives associated with Eclipse 2026 in Asturias.
